Pismo Beach is Summertime for Humans and Dogs

Summertime is in Full Swing in Pismo Beach for Humans and Animals Alike

Hello Friends and Travelers! After the foggy cool mornings and days of spring, hot fun in the summertime came in with a BANG, and we’re not just referring to all those fireworks. Luckily, Pismo Beach continues to have some of the most comfortable temperatures in the Golden State. And since so many of us love to travel with our pets, here are some tips for keeping your canine traveling companions safe, cool, and content this summer and throughout the summer vacation and holidays. Many of these tips also apply to any species of pets lovingly included in family vacations.

Book a Dog-Friendly Stay

First, book your stay at one of our excellent lodgings. Pismo Beach has dog friendly lodging for you and your animal companions.  Check out the Lodging Specials for the best summer deals. Take a look at our award winning dining establishments to get an idea of where you’d like to eat. Then peruse the many fun things to do and outdoor activities in Pismo Beach for you and your family.

Keeping Pets Safe in Summer Heat

Remember

Since dogs and other animals do not sweat like humans do and can easily overheat, remember to:

  • Provide plenty of water, shade, and rest—overheating can lead to heatstroke and even death!
  • Watch for these signs of overheating: heavy panting, dry or bright gums, thick drool, vomiting, diarrhea, and wobbly legs.
  • Never EVER leave pets in your car—they can overheat and die in record time!
  • Check with your veterinarian about purchasing sunscreen for your furry friends, especially if planning lots of outdoor play and activities.
  • Groom pets regularly and trim fur or hair, but NEVER shave them—their coats protect their skin from sunburn and actually keep pets cooler.
  • Keep an eye on the heat—walk pets when its cooler, such as early morning or evenings. Remember to touch the ground with your own foot or hand before letting them walk on hot surfaces. Doggie boots may be something to consider.
  • If your pets need quick cooling down, wet their paw pads and stomachs first with cool water.
  • Purchase the proper parasite control from your vet to help prevent the “itchies,” which can be miserable for pets.
  • If having fun near or on the water, consider an animal life vest for your pet.
  • Protect and keep animals calm during fireworks and other noisy environments—many pets get very frightened and can sometimes run away. Make sure pets are tagged and microchipped and even consider a GPS collar.

Happy Summertime, Friends, and we’ll see you soon in beautiful Pismo Beach!
