Join us each April at the Pismo Beach Pier for a day of sand art, stewardship, and citizen science because taking care of this town is something we can all do together.

Why We Celebrate

Our town and our coast are our responsibility. Earth Day falls on April 22, and we bring the celebration to the nearest weekend so everyone can join in, gathering at the Pismo Beach Pier to give back to the place we love. Whether you pick up a piece of trash, document a sea creature, or simply stop to admire a mandala drawn in the sand, every small act of care adds up to something meaningful.

What’s Happening

There are three ways to celebrate with us, but plenty more on your own! Join the Pismo Beach Stewardship and Educational Outreach Program at the Pismo Beach Pier.

Earth Day Sand Art

Local artist Avery of Mandala Sea creates a special Earth Day mural below the pier. He begins in the morning, and the finished piece is best viewed at low tide.

Beach Clean Up

One of the simplest, most impactful things you can do for this place is pick up trash on your beach walk. Stop by the stewardship booth near the airstream on the pier to borrow gloves, grabbers, and buckets, and make your afternoon stroll a little more meaningful.

City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge is a global bioblitz held each spring, and Pismo Beach takes part as part of the San Luis Obispo County effort. The goal is simple: get outside, photograph what’s living around you, and log it on the free app, iNaturalist. Every plant, bird, insect, and tide pool creature counts.

Swing by the stewardship booth to learn how to get started in under 5 minutes, find out about other events happening throughout the county that weekend, and pick up some stewardship swag to take home.

To participate in the City Nature Challenge, you do not need to come by the booth. It’s easy to start on your own, and you can do it from your own front yard.

About the Pismo Beach Stewardship & Educational Outreach Program

The Pismo Beach Stewardship and Educational Outreach Program is dedicated to connecting both visitors and locals with the incredible natural environment that makes this community so special. Through hands-on programming, community events, and partnerships with conservation organizations, the program works to foster a culture of care and curiosity along the Central Coast. The belief is simple: when people understand and appreciate the natural world around them, they become its most committed protectors. Events like our Earth Day Celebration are just one part of that ongoing work to build a community of people who love this place enough to look after it.

About the City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day community science event that invites people in cities around the world to get outside and document the wild plants and animals living in urban areas. Participants use the iNaturalist app to photograph and log their observations, contributing to a growing global record of urban biodiversity. What began as a friendly competition between two U.S. cities in 2016 has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with over 100,000 people across hundreds of cities participating.
