Stewardship means making small, meaningful choices to protect the places you love, ensuring that the land, waters, and community remain special for future generations to enjoy.

Here in Pismo Beach, we encourage visitors to take simple steps that help protect marine life, keep our trails and beaches beautiful, and support the local community.

There are so many easy ways to get involved during your trip. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a longer stay, your actions impact how others can experience Pismo Beach

Fun Ways for Families to Get Involved

Pismo Beach is full of ways for kids connect with nature. The Junior Ranger Program at Pismo State Beach invites kids ages 7–12 to earn a badge and explore the local ecosystems here. They can partiptate in hands-on activities that are guided by State Parks experts. Families also might want to explore the creatures living in tidepools. Go on a low tide to spot colorful marine animals, and identify them with the help of free apps like Seek or iNaturalist.

For a quiet moment, swing by the Shell Beach Library for weekly storytime sessions. These often feature environmental themes and talk about the local landscapes.

One the right weekend, catch incredible sand art creations by Mandala by the Sea at the Pismo Pier. They’re huge works of eco-art that inspire creativity and a deeper sense of connection to the landscape. Before you leave, pick up a free Pismo Beach Activity Book from City Hall to keep the learning going on the road.

Help Keep Our Beaches Beautiful

One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to give back during your visit is by joining a beach cleanup. Vespera Resort hosts a weekly beach cleanup every Monday morning from 8:30 to 9:30, which is open to everyone. Even spending a few minutes picking up litter during your beach walk makes a big difference.

If you want to dive deeper into ocean education, visit the Central Coast Aquarium in nearby Avila Beach. Hands-on exhibits introduce you to the fascinating creatures that call this coastline home, making it a fun and educational stop for all ages.

Stay, Dine, and Explore Sustainably

Choosing eco-friendly travel options can make your trip even more meaningful. Consider arriving by train—the Grover Beach Amtrak Station is just minutes from downtown Pismo Beach, making it easy to step off the train and start your coastal adventure without ever needing a car.Once you’re here, explore town on two wheels with a bike rental from Pedego Electric Bikes in Pismo Beach. Whether you’re cruising along the coast or heading up to scenic trails, biking is a fun, sustainable way to see more while leaving a lighter footprint.

When it comes to accommodations, many local hotels are committed to green practices, helping you enjoy a more sustainable stay. Dining locally supports the community, too. Choose farm-to-table restaurants like Lido at Dolphin Bay Resort, Honeymoon Café, or YNOT Organic, where fresh, seasonal ingredients are front and center.

For wine lovers, a trip to Edna Valley is a must. Just a short drive away, this lush region is home to wineries that embrace sustainable and organic farming practices. Wolff Vineyards, Biddle Ranch, and Chamisal Vineyards are fantastic options. And don’t miss the Pismo Beach Summer Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 4 PM to 7 PM, where you can stock up on farm-fresh snacks, produce, and handmade goods.

Experience Nature and Conservation Up Close

For a deeper connection to Pismo’s wild side, take to the water or trails. Kayak tours along the coastline explore sea caves and kelp forests while teaching you about the ecosystems you’re paddling through. Or hop on a sea otter and whale watching tour departing from San Luis Harbor, where you can see marine life up close and learn about conservation efforts protecting these incredible species.

If you prefer to stay on land, join a guided hike at the Pismo Preserve, where you’ll hear stories about native plants, wildlife, and the importance of sustainable land management. In winter, don’t miss the Monarch Butterfly Grove, where butterflies cluster in the eucalyptus trees—a once-in-a-lifetime sight that highlights the need for habitat protection. CCSPA runs a docent trailer every day from 11 AM to 4 PM, with extended hours of 10 AM to 4 PM during the peak season from October to February to learn more.
