Hiking at the Pismo Preserve
At over 900 acres, the Pismo Preserve offers truly exceptional and diverse recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors will enjoy over 10 miles of existing ranch roads and trails that meander throughout the property offering ready-to-use routes ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. These trails traverse serene oak woodlands and coastal ridge lines with stunning panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean stretching from the Irish Hills to Point Sal.
The Monarch Butterfly Medallion Trail
Follow a series of Monarch Butterfly Medallion signs on a 1.1-mile coastal route from the Pismo Beach Pier to the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, one of the largest Western Monarch overwintering sites in California. The medallions mark the path south along the coast, making the grove easy to reach on foot from downtown. This trail was built to make the grove simpler to find and to turn the walk between the pier and the grove into an intentional coastal pathway, one that invites you to slow down and notice where you are.

Hiking with your dog
Here, you can safely and happily travel with your pets and enjoy all that Pismo Beach has to offer. Here are some guidelines to keep everybody safe:
Leash Law: Dogs must be leashed and held by a capable person at all times and are permitted on the beach but not on Pismo Pier. Make sure dogs never harass shorebirds.
Clean Up: Since dog waste negatively affects the environment, all pet waste must be picked up and safely disposed of.
Safety for All: Leashing prevents injuries and helps create a welcoming environment for other visitors and their pets.
Share the Trail: Be considerate of walkers, children, hikers, joggers, cyclists, horses, and wildlife by maintaining control of your dog.
Avoid Encounters with Dangerous Wildlife: Unleashed dogs can encounter rattlesnakes, bears, and cougars, for example, with tragic consequences and can negatively impact flora and fauna and disturb birds and chicks.
