Kid-Friendly & Family Education Activities

Jr. Ranger Program – Kids ages 7-12 can become Jr. Rangers at Pismo State Beach. Join Park Rangers for fun outdoor activities, earn a badge and logbook at your first session, and explore nature at Oceano and North Beach Campfire Centers all summer. LEARN MORE
Tide Pool Exploration – Go on a family-friendly tidepool walk and learn about intertidal life. Use self-guided apps like Seek or iNaturalist. LEARN MORE (Link to the new Tidepool Page)
Storytime at the Library – Many of the county’s libraries do weekly storytime, and some of the books focus on the environment. Shell Beach is our closest public library; its storytime is on Tuesdays from 11:30 am – 12:00 pm. LEARN MORE
Eco-Art at the Pier – Occasionally, local artists create art at the pier. Mandala by the Sea creates huge sand art for monthly Pismo events. Check the calendar to see when the next one will be. CALENDAR
Activity Books – Head to the Pismo Beach City Hall and grab a Pismo Beach Activity Book. It’ll teach you all about the local ecosystem in Pismo Beach with QR codes to web pages to learn more. You can also find the digital files online. LEARN MORE

Coastal Conservation and Education

Pismo Beach Cleanups – Local groups schedule monthly beach cleanups. Check out EcoSLO, Surfrider SLO, Sandy Feet Guardians, and our events page to discover an organized one. Vespera Resort also hosts one every single week from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM in front of the hotel, by the beach. And remember, you can always go on your own! Central Coast Aquarium (Avila Beach) – The local aquarium is in our neighboring town just five minutes away. Participate in educational programs on marine life and tide pool ecology or go wander around yourself and soak up the information posted. LEARN MORE
Sea Otter & Whale Watching Tours – Learn about marine mammal conservation through boat tours from San Luis Harbor in Avila Beach. The nutrient-rich waters of this area make it a vital habitat for sea lions, seals, and otters, offering a prime spot for marine mammal sightings. LEARN MORE
Kayak Tours – Take a kayak tour around the coast and through the caves with a knowledgeable guide. They’ll teach you what makes this coastline special and all about the animals that inhabit the waters. LEARN MORE

Habitat Restoration & Wildlife Protection

Monarch Butterfly Grove Volunteer Program – This program is intended for long-term volunteers throughout the monarch season. People are trained to count the monarchs in specific locations during their migration, and this data is used to better understand their movements and population health. LEARN MORE
General Land Conservancy Volunteer Program – Get your hands dirty and make an impact. Whether you’re planting native wildflowers, repairing trails, or restoring wildlife habitats, every effort helps keep the Pismo Preserve thriving. Invasive Plant Removal Volunteer Day at Pismo Preserve: On the second Wednesday of each month at 9:00 AM, the Land Conservancy leads an invasive plant removal workshop. Learn about these plants and help to move them to protect the ecosystem. LEARN MORE
