Pismo Beach is Open: Your Classic California Escape Awaits

As part of a long-term effort to improve travel along California’s Central Coast, construction is underway on Highway 101 through Pismo Beach. While this work will enhance future travel, visitors may experience delays during peak times.
With a little planning, your time here remains just as effortless, memorable, and well worth the trip.
What’s Happening
Caltrans, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, is improving southbound Highway 101 through Shell Beach and Pismo Beach to better support travel along the Central Coast.
This project includes:
- Widening the left shoulder to create a part-time travel lane
- A lane that will open during peak traffic periods
- A new park-and-ride lot in Pismo Beach
Construction Timeline:
This is projected to be a three year project beginning in March of 2026.
Purpose:
To reduce congestion and improve travel reliability during high-traffic periods, especially during weekends, summer travel, and major events.

Current Construction Activity
As part of the Caltrans Highway 101 construction project, the City has been made aware there will be temporary nighttime closures on City streets to facilitate bridge improvements at the Highway 101 overpasses.
Highway 101 Underpass – Spyglass Road Closure

Highway 101 Underpass – Mattie Road Closure
Hours: 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Prior to each closure, temporary traffic control devices and detour signage will be installed. Trained flaggers will be stationed on both sides of the roadway at designated crossing locations to assist and direct pedestrians and bicyclists through the signed detour route. Upon completion of the demolition activities, cleanup, and final inspection each morning, all temporary traffic control devices will be removed, and the roadway, sidewalks, and bicycle facilities will be reopened to the public.
Work on the Spyglass Drive, Mattie Road, and Wadsworth Avenue bridges over U.S. 101 will begin the week of July 20. The traveling public can expect heavy metal barriers to be installed at the underpasses and along Price Street south of the Mattie Road intersection to allow safe access to the bridges. Travel lanes will be narrowed through the underpasses and on Price Street, but two lanes will remain open to traffic. Drivers are reminded to use caution when traveling through the construction area and to share the road with bicyclists. Heavy metal barriers will also be installed on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 near these bridges and along the median to provide safe construction access.
Construction of the retaining wall along Price Street is in full swing. A concrete barrier protecting construction crews have been installed, will narrow the northbound bike lanes slightly. Bicyclists should continue exercising caution as they travel through the construction area. Two travel lanes on Price Street will remain open, but the public may encounter temporary flagging operations to accommodate materials delivery and other construction activities.
Construction of a retaining wall along Price Street began April 6th. The retaining wall is needed to widen southbound U.S. 101 to allow enough space for the part-time travel lane to be constructed. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Price Street from the downtown area north to Mattie Road. Motorists will encounter traffic control, flagging operations, and on-street parking restrictions Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Access to businesses, hotels, and residential areas will remain open throughout construction.
The Pismo Preserver Overflow Parking Lot is closed and currently being utilized as a staging area before construction of the park and ride lot on the site begins later this year.
Work along Price Street and closure of the overflow lot is expected to last through 2026.
The City of Pismo Beach, Caltrans, and SLOCOG are monitoring impacts and providing timely information to residents, businesses, and visitors as the project progresses.

Phase 1 Update
- Project Begins: Monday, March 30, 2026
- Location: Price Street (from off-ramp to off-ramp)
- Traffic Impacts:
- Southbound lanes on Price Street will have alternating traffic from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- Price Street will return to two-way traffic in the evenings
- Bike lanes will remain open
- Current Work: This phase includes construction of a retaining wall to support a future third lane on Highway 101.
