Put Shell Beach Food & Wine on Your Central Coast Summer Calendar

Dolphin Bay Aerial View

All images courtesy of Dolphin Bay Most wine regions give you one valley. Pismo Beach gives you three. Sitting where South San Luis Obispo County meets North Santa Barbara County, it puts three distinct growing regions within reach along the same stretch of sand, with ocean views included.

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, that whole idea gets compressed into a single oceanfront lawn. Shell Beach Food & Wine Festival brings producers from Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, and Santa Maria Valley together at Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa, right on the bluff above the coast. It makes it possible to drink your way across the Central Coast without ever leaving the coastline.

Three regions in one afternoon

Wine Tasting with Ocean View

The reason this event is worth planning a weekend around comes down to geography. Wineries from three valleys pouring side by side mean you can compare growing regions in a single walk across the lawn, no drive time required. Figure out your favorite tastes without the gas expense and drive time.

Edna Valley sits closest to the coast, and it shows in the glass. Cool ocean air moves inland through the Los Osos Valley gap most afternoons, which keeps the fruit bright and the acidity high. This is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir country, structured and cool-climate. You can read more about the region on our Edna Valley page.

Push south into Santa Ynez Valley, and the picture warms up. The valley runs east to west, so the sites closer to the ocean stay cool while the inland end gets real summer heat. That range is why the region grows everything from crisp whites to bold Rhône reds. Santa Maria Valley splits the difference, a long coastal-influenced bench known for elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a bit more weight than Edna’s.

Tasting all three in one afternoon is the closest thing to a Central Coast crash course you’ll find. The lineup for 2026 includes Talley Vineyards, Alban Vineyards, Paul Lato, Foxen, Chamisal, and Center of Effort, along with breweries and distilleries for anyone looking for a break from grapes.

An earlier taste: dinner with Laetitia

Lido Dinner Plating

If August feels far off, there’s a smaller event to hold you over. On Wednesday, July 22, Lido Restaurant & Lounge hosts a five-course dinner built around Laetitia’s sparkling wines. Chef Chris Shackelford and winemaker Eric Hickey walk guests through the pairings across the evening, a more intimate counterpart to the big oceanfront tasting in August.

It’s a good option if you’d rather sit down to a proper meal than graze a lawn, or if you want to start the wine-and-waves weekend early.

Make it a wine-country weekend

Wine Pouring at Dolphin Bay

The event runs one afternoon, but the region rewards a longer stay. Base yourself in Pismo Beach, and you’re positioned to actually visit the valleys you tasted from, not just sample them once and head home.

Spend a morning in the Shell Beach tidepools before the crowds, walk the bluff trail for the coastal views, then drive up to the Edna Valley tasting rooms to see where the wine actually comes from. The valley is a short trip inland, which is the whole point of the wine-and-waves setup: ocean in the morning, vineyards in the afternoon.
