Inland is roasting. Pismo Beach isn’t. While the valley climbs past 100, the coast is sitting in the 70s with a breeze off the water, which is the whole reason this town has been a summer escape for a century. The fog burns off in the early morning, the sand stays walkable, and nobody has to plan their day around the heat.
Corgis, cold treats, oceanfront concerts, and a nightlife scene that keeps going after the sun drops. Come cool off with us.
Corgi Nation Vacation
September 11-13
The stumpy-legged takeover returns! Corgi Nation Vacation is a full weekend built for short-stacked besties and the people who love them. Think oceanfront pawties, sunset wine tastings your dog is invited to, beach festivals, and slow brunches with sandy paws under the table. VIP tickets cover all three days of festivities.
Just want to watch and giggle? Saturday’s beach party by the pier is free and open to everyone, honorary corgis included. Games and competitions run 10 AM to 1 PM.
Live on the Rocks
Two shows left in The Cliffs Hotel and Spa’s free oceanfront concert series, and both are worth the drive. The stage sits right on the bluff, so the band plays with the whole ocean behind them.
- Sun, Aug 9 — Back to School Cool, featuring The Molly Ringwald Project
- Mon, Sept 7 — Labor Day, featuring Legion of Groove
Bring a low-back chair, grab a drink at the seaside bar, and settle in for the afternoon. Kids run around, dogs make friends, and by the time the set winds down the sun is doing its thing over the water. Free entry, no tickets, no fuss.
Hot Days, Cold Treats
Pismo Beach has a cold fix for every kind of craving on hot summer days. Start with the classics near the pier: Cowboy Cookie scoops homemade ice cream into cookie bowls, The Scoop piles on generous cones and matcha drinks, and Iry-n-Blenders pour all kinds of delicious drinks like smoothies, fresh juices, teas, and boba.
Low Tide Spot is famous for their smash lemonades that are as big as they are bright, Swell Sandwich Spot‘s Beach Freeze is the frozen treat locals keep coming back for, and Surfside Donuts shakes up dirty sodas loaded with cream and syrup for a fizzy and on-trend twist.
Grab a treat, find a bench, and let the ocean breeze do the rest.
A Different Type of Cool Down
The grown-up version of a cold treat is just as easy to find. Start with a spiked sip at Cool Cat Cafe, where the boozy milkshakes turn a beachfront classic into something for grown-ups. Then wander to Cali Love Wine, a laid-back tasting room a block from the pier whose crisp rosé is made for a warm afternoon (and yes, there’s karaoke if the mood strikes).
Craft beer fans have their pick too. Kulturhaus Brewing Company is the only beer actually brewed in Pismo Beach, pairing German-style pours and house ferments in a cozy Price Street space, while Pismo Brewing Company keeps it casual with a sunny patio and cold taps.
Want something a little different? Puffer’s of Pismo is an intimate wine bar with generous pours and live music most nights. However you take it, there’s a cold one with your name on it somewhere in Pismo Beach.
Downtown After Dark
Pismo Beach doesn’t clock out at sunset. The neon flicks on along Pomeroy and Price, the bowling alley that’s been running since 1939 lights its lanes, and the town’s only rooftop bar pours over the water. On the right night, a Vandenberg rocket streaks across the sky while you’re mid-nightcap. The catch: none of it works if you’re racing home before dark.
Celebrating Our Pollinators
The smallest creatures on this coast do the heaviest lifting. Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and moths on the late shift keep the whole ecosystem running, and there’s good news this year: the monarch overwintering count jumped 64% this past winter. Look for them at the Pismo Preserve, the Shell Beach bluffs, or Oceano Dunes, and give them a hand at home by planting natives and skipping the pesticides.
Lodging Specials
People have been finding their way to Pismo Beach for generations, long before it was easy to get here. The instinct is old and simple. When the inland valleys turn to an oven, you go where the water is.
Wherever you stay, the right spot makes all the difference. Our lodging specials page is updated regularly with deals from hotels and vacation rentals across Pismo Beach. Take a look and find the perfect place to call home base for the rest of your summer.
