Pismo Beach has always had a way of drawing strong women and keeping them. They’ve opened restaurants during recessions, built businesses from scratch, and shaped a coastal town into the community it is today.
Standing on the Shoulders of Mattie Smyer
No conversation about women in Pismo Beach starts anywhere other than here. Mattie Smyer arrived in 1924 as a divorced single mother, waitressed her way to financial independence, and by 1935, negotiated her own business loan with Bank of America and opened Mattie’s Tavern.
It became one of the best dinner houses on the California coast, with her running it every single day for nearly four decades. When a highway relocation threatened to cut off access to her restaurant, she took out newspaper ads addressed to the Governor until people found their way back. The road out front still bears her name!

Plan Your Visit to Pismo Beach
The best way to support these businesses is to show up, and Pismo Beach makes that easy. The town is walkable, and most of these spots are within a short stroll of each other and the beach. Grab a coffee, wander into a boutique, have lunch at a women-owned cafe, and end the afternoon with a sunset walk along the shore.
Pismo Beach is a town built by people who showed up and made something out of it. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women who never stopped doing exactly that.
