Pismo Beach is known for its award-winning clam chowder, the iconic pier, and a downtown lined with neon signs. But ask a local what to order on a foggy afternoon, and the answer is almost always fish and chips.
Twelve spots around town do their own version, from paper-basket counter joints to bluff-top beer gardens. Check them all off, find your favorite, and keep going back.
1. Splash Cafe
The Pomeroy Avenue original is famous for chowder, but the fish and chips hold their own. Crispy, hot, and best eaten at a sidewalk table before you hit the sand. Order at the counter, expect a line, and know it moves quickly. A can’t-miss on the LA-to-San-Francisco drive, and an easy walk from the pier.
2. Pismo Fish & Chips & Seafood Restaurant
A family-run fixture on Cypress Street since the 1960s, and the most literal answer to the question. Choose your fish, battered or cracker-dusted, from white cod to halibut to sand dabs, with an old-school seafood market up front. Vintage tuck-and-roll booths, decades of regulars, and a menu that has barely needed to change.
3. Wooly’s Beach Bar & Grill
Right on the boardwalk by the pier, Wooly’s pairs its fish and chips with an open-air deck and a pet-friendly patio. The view does a lot of the work here, but the fried cod and crunchy fries earn their spot. A solid pick when the group wants toes-in-the-sand casual with a cocktail alongside.
4. Ada’s Fish House
Chef-owned, Ada’s brings an East Coast hand to its fish and chips, served with the same care as the lobster rolls and New England crab cakes. Dog-friendly outdoor seating and an easygoing vibe. Come for the chowder, stay for a properly fried piece of fish.
5. Cracked Crab
Cracked Crab is best known for its buckets, but the fish and chips are a reliable order in a room built for seafood. Family-size portions, budget-friendly for what it is, and a good landing spot when half the table wants crab, and the other half wants the classic.
6. Brad’s Restaurant
Brad’s Restaurant is the oak-pit barbecue spot that also does a tidy fish and chips, plus breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The patio is a pleasant place to land, and the tri-tip nearby on the menu makes it an easy compromise for a mixed group.
7. Cool Cat Cafe
A 1950s-diner throwback on Pomeroy Avenue with a full bar and adult milkshakes, Cool Cat serves crispy fish and chips alongside its burgers and locally caught fresh fish. Fun, family-friendly, and central, with outdoor seating for people-watching over lunch.
8. Ventana Grill
Perched on a coastal bluff on the north end of town, Ventana Grill pairs a wide seafood menu with one of the best views in the area and a busy happy hour. Come for the vista, order the fish and chips, and time it for the sunset over the water.
9. El Pizmo Fish Co.
A downtown fish market and taqueria a few doors from Moondoggies, El Pizmo works with fresh, locally caught fish, halibut, salmon, tuna, sold by the pound and served across the counter. About as close to the source as fish and chips gets in town. Note the limited days, so check hours before you go.
10. Hoagie’s Sandwiches & Grill
Best known for its sandwiches, Hoagie’s has also built a following for its fish and chips, generous, well-priced, and a local favorite. The neighborhood spot worth knowing when the pier-side lines get long.
11. Old SLO at The Cape
The Shell Beach beer garden where award-winning Santa Maria barbecue meets Cape Cod seafood. Fish and chips, lobster rolls, and homemade chowder share the menu with tri-tip and pulled pork, and the patio features 40-plus local beers, fire pits, and live music. One of the more fun group settings on the list.
12. Blast & Brew
A Price Street tap house with a big American menu and a wall of beers on tap. The fish and chips pair naturally with a local pour, and the TVs, taps, and casual patio make it an easy call for a group.

Planning a visit
Pismo Beach’s downtown and pier are walkable, so a fish-and-chips crawl is an easy afternoon, especially midweek when the lines are shorter and the tables come easier. Turn it into an overnight with current lodging specials, and check hours and menus with each restaurant before you go, since seafood offerings change with the catch and the season.
